Alamo Women's Club Our Legacy and Vision

Alamo Women’s Club (AWC) is affiliated with The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), an international organization committed to community improvement and volunteer service. The AWC operates as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit (Tax I.D. #94-1426354).

Our Members

AWC’s membership includes former business owners, professionals from corporate and educational backgrounds, devoted volunteers, and neighbors from our local area. Rooted in the San Francisco East Bay, our members are united by a shared passion for enhancing the community and fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.
By the early 1950’s we had found a permanent home; The Alamo Women’s Club building and grounds are the legacy of an inspired and generous member, Ruth Henry and her husband, Dr. Corwin Henry. Our beautiful building now allows us to hold even more philanthropic activities and community outreach events.

Our Beginnings

The Alamo Women’s Club traces its origins back to 1916, beginning as the Mothers’ Club of Alamo Grammar School. One of the club’s first notable achievements was the establishment of a Library Room. In 1921, AWC became a member of the national General Federation of Women’s Clubs, taking on initiatives related to women’s education, suffrage, improved working conditions, and health care reforms.

During World War II, members contributed to the war effort by serving shifts in a watchtower at Alamo School, preparing bandages, supporting military families, and operating a canteen for returning soldiers.

Our Home

By the early 1950s, the club secured a permanent meeting space thanks to the generosity of member Ruth Henry and her husband, Dr. Corwin Henry. This facility continues to serve as the cornerstone for AWC’s philanthropic and community outreach programs.

Today's Impact

The club’s community involvement continues to expand, providing a growing number of scholarships and financial support to a wide array of community projects. Over the past five years, AWC has awarded more than 60 need-based college scholarships, dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours, and hosted numerous popular events and programs throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

AWC is committed to supporting those in need and creating new opportunities for the community. Our achievements are made possible by the dedication of women who bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a drive to shape a brighter future.
As the oldest service club in Alamo, our doors are open to all women in the greater Bay Area who are interested in joining our meaningful work. Interested individuals are encouraged to explore our Membership section for more information. (Membership)
