GEORGE MARK CHILDREN'S HOUSE

A private home in San Leandro providing care for children with life threatening illnesses. Their families also receive support through respite care, as well as grief and bereavement counseling. The aim is to relieve suffering by providing comfort to the children and support services to the family. This essentially is giving the valuable gift of time - time for kids to be just kids and parents to be "Mom" and "Dad" instead of round the clock caregivers.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Purchase and deliver Easter baskets and items for the children.
  • Be a volunteer for their annual Pumpkin Day, help with pumpkin decorating activities.
  • Make blankets and knitted hats for the children and their families.
  • Donate in-kind items to the organization.

HOSPICE EAST BAY

This organization offers in-home, end-of-life support upon request. We support many hospice services, including two hospice homes, through donations of money, goods or volunteer time. AWC also sponsors a holiday tree lighting to support this program.

Bruns House (part of Hospice):

A private home in Alamo for up to six patients who are unable to remain in their homes and still need to receive palliative care. Since its founding in 2004, over 1500 patients have stayed at Bruns, where families have unlimited access to their loved one.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Participate in planning the annual tree lighting in Alamo to benefit Hospice.
  • Make decorated bulletin board for patients.
  • Deliver holiday cookies and other treats to Bruns House.
