OVERVIEW: A place where women come together to work toward a better community for all.

Our philanthropic activities and scholarship opportunities are as diverse as our membership and the community that we live in. We are proud to have donated over $100,000 in the last 5 years to a wide array of local causes, including  $62,000 donated to local students for scholarships.

Of course, not all support can be measured in monetary increments. Every member is also encouraged to actively support one or more of these organizations with their time and skills. One woman may help with the graduation activities for Canine Companions For Independence, another may enjoy offering her time teaching classes to emancipated foster youth, and yet others have chosen to help cheer and support kids in hospice. Many of our philanthropies offer special tours just for us, so that we gain an “up close and personal” understanding of our volunteer opportunities. And in the process, we also get to witness the results that our members have already accomplished.

Besides donations and our time for philanthropies we also recycle for good: for our planet, to reduce waste and to benefit our community.  We ask members to bring used items through our Purple Pails program. Each month we collect these used items at our business meeting.

What areas interest you?

CHILDREN AND FAMILY

Our efforts are extensive: from support and resources for foster care kids and children with special needs, to families who are struggling economically in our community.

HEALTH

Core to our mission is the need to alleviate suffering in our community.  Whether it’s learning to cope with childhood mental illness or struggling with a long-term or terminal medical issue, we support philanthropies providing hope in those areas. We’ve found that beyond the physical pain, it’s the suffering that comes of feeling confused, frightened and alone while in treatment that offers the most opportunity for support.

COMMUNITY

Every age has its challenges. We work to help those in our community that most need assistance – from young children and teens who have developmental delays, to physically challenged people finding independence through the help of a Canine Companion service dog, to foster care children for whom the system has failed.  Volunteering in our community benefits everyone.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We have amazing young people in our community who are working hard to make their dreams a reality.  Over the years, the Alamo Women’s Club has awarded several thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, single parents attending community college, and young adults who are emancipated from foster care and determined to start a new life for themselves.
